Sink-Tips VS Poly
Keith Balfourd dredged this chromer up on a sink-tip

In the modern era of Spey fishing for steelhead and trout, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the huge selection of equipment on the market. In today's post I thought it would be helpful to put Poly Leaders under the microscope in an effort to distinguish them from sink-tips. More importantly, I want to help you decide when the right time to use these tools.

Airflo Streamer Switch
The Airflo Streamer Switch is the ultimate two-handed streamer line

Spey anglers have been chasing trout with the long rod for years. However, streamer fishing has been somewhat frustrating because there hasn’t been a Spey line designed specifically with the needs of trout anglers in mind… until now. Airflo recently released my newest line design, the Streamer Switch.

Winston Spey Clinics in Montana

Winston Spey Clinics
Montana bound!

I’m obsessed with the fusion of Spey rods and trout fishing. Although I love single-hand casting and fishing, Spey rods offer a new challenge in the trout game. Plus, it’s easy to fall in love with Spey casting because it’s so incredibly fun! Outside of the casting, I’ve discovered that Microspey rods are unbelievably effective tools for fishing streamers, wets and nymphs while wading. Even dry fly fishing can be deadly in the right situations.

5 Tips for Winter Steelhead

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 19:15 -- Tom Larimer
Winter Steelhead
Hooked up

Here's a few tips to help you find more steelhead this winter. Happy hunting!

Look for the “Gooey” water. If you’ve ever fished with me, you’ve heard me talk about matching the water I choose to fish with the water temperatures. In the cold months of winter, don't waste precious fishing time in the short days of winter fishing fast riffles... The fish don't live there when the water is cold. Instead, focus your efforts in the slow, “gooey” water in the guts and tail-outs of pools.
