One of many from our last day at AK West

I recently returned from the land of the midnight sun and giant Chinook salmon… We had a great trip to Alaska West this summer. Despite many poor returns of salmon in rivers throughout Alaska, the Kanektok run was robust. I ended my trip on a high note, fishing with LO clients David Luthy & Chris Crum. We went out with a bang hooking an obscene number of diamond bright kings our last day. Thanks for a great trip fellas!

Lady luck was on our side...

Civilization has a way of slapping you in the face when you return from the Alaskan bush. -My senses are on overload at the moment. At Alaska West you wake to the sweet sound of songbirds in the tundra. As I woke in my hotel room in Anchorage this morning, a Harley Davidson ripping down Spenard had replaced the raspy call of the varied thrush… Yuck.

Finding a Happy Place With Kings

Finding the happy place...

Pursuing king salmon with flies has a way of making even the best anglers second-guess themselves. Some days it feels like you did something to really piss off the fish Gods… Hooks bend, knots break, rods blow up and you can’t land a salmon to save your life. Or, even worse, fish eat your fly but for some cosmic reason you just can’t hook the little bastards. You begin to question everything from your hook set to the fly you’re fishing. Myself, I blame tough fishing on the hat I chose to wear that morning.

Bill and Ben with a K-Tok chromer...

It's just past supper time on the first day of my hosted trip to Alaska West. -I snuck out early to write a post. The decibels in the dining tent seam to increase with each story of the day told. The Whiskey also helps raise the volume.

Things started off slow this morning but as the afternoon tide arrived, a good push of chrome bright kings and chums came charging up the river. It feels so good to be back in salmon camp.
