Deschutes River Steelhead Fly Fishing Report: 8/21/2008 We asked for cool weather and rain and the steelhead Gods came through. After a tough few days before last weekend, the Deschutes river came back to life this past week. With water temperatures falling back to 62 degrees, the steelhead finally got back on the bite. We had good responses on floating lines in the mornings. The mid-day sink-tip bite wasn't as strong this week though the fish we did hook dished out some serious ass kickings. The dam counts reflect the water temperatures in the Columbia. On a recent smallmouth adventure, the thermometer read 71 degrees. This has slowed the progress of the fish in the big river. In a way, I'm glad this happened. It will insure we have good fishing later in the season. However, the fish counts are still excellent over Bonneville dam. The next month should be the big push of hatchery fish into the system. More reports soon. We have guide dates in mid September and October available. Check out the Deschutes Steelhead Page or give us a call at 541.490.9446. Dates are going fast!!!
