Larimer Outfitters is the most experienced fly fishing guide service on the Clackamas River. The "Clack" is one of the premier winter and spring steelhead rivers in Oregon. Its long, graceful runs are perfect for Spey casting and traditional steelhead presentations.
Originating in the Cascade Mountains, high in the Mount Hood National Forest, the Clack runs northwest until emptying into the Willamette River outside of Portland, Oregon.
Winter steelhead start ascending the Clackamas River in early December, at first in small pods. By Christmas, the pods can become waves. As winter presses on, more natives will begin their journey home. By mid-March, you can almost smell spring in the air and the prime time arrives. The newly arrived steelhead, while chrome bright, are ready to find their birthplace. As the water temperatures warm in April, more steelhead rush into the system. However, many of them are actually early summer steelhead. These fish won't spawn until the following winter. This is a wonderful time of the year. It's totally possible to hook a late winter steelhead, and early summer steelhead, or a spring Chinook. By May, almost all of the steelhead are early summer fish. Chrome bright missiles fresh from the ocean. If the water conditions are right, I continue to guide the Clackamas through June.
We'll be utilizing my jet boat to access the endless miles of incredible fly water on the Clackamas. Consequently, we can fish almost twice the water as we could floating the river. Winter steelheading is about two things; being at the right place at the right time, and covering the water. The jet boat allows us to do both.
With its seductive water, amazing fish, and overwhelming beauty, the Clackamas River is a "must fish" for any serious steelhead angler.
