Tom Larimer Fly Fishing Guide

Todd Harris

Todd Harris, partner in Larimer Outfitters, is a long time steelhead & trout addict. More importantly, he is passionate about sharing his vast experience in Spey fishing for steelhead, salmon and trout with the anglers he guides.

He has honed his patient teaching style over an impressive guide career. His tenure began 15 years ago on Alaska’s Kenai River where he and Tom Larimer became great friends. He spent a four-year tour of duty guiding the Deschutes and has been quietly building a reputation of being one of the best fly fishing guides on the winter steelhead rivers of Oregon’s North Coast.

Steelhead fishing runs in Todd’s veins… It was his father's passion, which he thankfully handed down to him. He caught his first steelhead at the age of six and has been obsessed with the chase ever since.

Tom Larimer

Tom Larimer owns and operates Larimer Outfitters, a fly fishing only guide service out of Hood River, Oregon. He calls the Deschutes River home from the beginning of trout season in April until the weather gets too cold to Spey cast in November. His steelhead jet boat camps are legendary. Once the snow flies, Tom’s focus shifts to guiding the winter steelhead rivers of northern Oregon. Depending on the conditions, you might find him floating the Sandy, jet boating on the Clackamas or hiking into the Hood.

Tom has lived and guided in the Oregon since 2001. Before moving to the Northwest, he guided the world famous upper Kenai River in Alaska, the fabled steelhead & trout waters of Northwest Michigan, and the rivers he learned to fly fish on in Wisconsin. His eighteen years of guiding experience have given him a patient and enthusiastic teaching style while on the water or when giving clinics. However, Tom’s passion goes beyond just teaching casting or fishing techniques. He loves to share lessons on the history, the flora and the fauna of his home waters.

While he loves sharing his knowledge of the river near Hood River, Tom also hosts clients to world-class fly fishing destinations around the world. His travels have taken him to Alaska, British Columbia, the Bahamas, Belize and beyond.

Outside of guiding and hosting trips, Tom is one of the most revered Spey casting instructors in the country. His Spey casting video entitled “Skagit Revolution” showcases his easy to understand method of instructing the sport. More so, he teaches private lessons near his home in Hood River as well as numerous group clinics throughout the country. His teaching style revolves around the family of lines he designed for Airflo Fly Lines. His contributions to the Spey world include the Skagit Compact, the Skagit Switch, the Skagit Intermediate, the Rage Compact and the Streamer Switch. More recently, he developed a cutting edge series of Microspey rods for the Winston Rod Company.

Finally, as a man who makes his living from a natural resource, Tom is a steward of the water and her fish. He is a member & supporter of Trout Unlimited, Oregon Water Watch and a founding member and board member for the Deschutes River Alliance.
