Fierce Allegiance
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, nickel, sizes 1.5-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: White polar bear or kid goat
Underwing: Chartreuse Mirage Flashabou
Tail: Natural red golden pheasant body feather
Rid: Extra small silver tinsel
Body: ½ Blue Trilobal dubbing,
½ purple angora goat dubbing
Hackle: Purple guinea
Eyes: Jungle cock (optional)
About the fly: This is a primary searching fly for all conditions. Blue is the most underutilized
color in steelhead angling. It is the most visible color under a variety of water conditions. A few
years ago, I spent a winter in the Bering Sea crab fishing. The Fierce Allegiance was a boat out of
Dutch Harbor, Alaska. I loved that name. I loved what it meant. While guiding, I almost always
have one of my rods fishing it.
Unconditional
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, nickel, sizes 1.5-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: White polar bear or kid goat
Underwing: Chartreuse Mirage Flashabou
Tail: Natural red golden pheasant body feather
Rid: Extra small silver tinsel
Body: ½ Chartreuse floss, ½ Blue Trilobal dubbing
Hackle: Blue guinea over purple saddle hackle
Eyes: Jungle cock (optional)
About the fly: I fish this fly as a searching pattern though it fishes particularly well in glacially
stained water of the Klickitat or when the White river is puking chuff into the lower Deschutes.
The Unconditional has become a favorite on many summer steelhead rivers.
Irish Car Bomb
(Marabou wing/ hair wing)
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, gold, sizes 1.5-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: Black marabou or black kid goat
Underwing: Copper Krystal Flash
Tail: Natural red golden pheasant body feather
Rid: Extra small gold tinsel
Body: ½ Chartreuse floss, ½ Black angora goat
Hackle: Chartreuse guinea over black saddle
hackle
Eyes: jungle cock (optional)
About the fly: A product of late night fly tying combined with drinking shots of Irish whiskey
dropped into Guinness stout... I fish the marabou wing for low light conditions, and the hair wing
as a general searching pattern.
Purple Green Butt
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, nickel, sizes 1.5-7
Thread: Purple, 8/0
Wing: White polar bear or kid goat
Underwing: Chartreuse Mirage Flashabou
Tail: Natural red golden pheasant body feather
Rid: Small chartreuse wire
Body: ½ Chartreuse floss, ½ Purple angora goat
Hackle: Purple guinea
Eyes: Jungle cock (optional)
About the fly: My version of an old standby.
Brazilian
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, black or gold, sizes 3-7
Thread: Rust, 8/0
Wing: Brown bucktail or kid goat
Underwing: Copper Krystal Flash
Tag: Copper wire
Tail: Natural red golden pheasant body feather
Rid: Copper wire
Body: Claret Trilobal dubbing
Hackle: Claret guinea
Eyes: Jungle cock (optional)
About the fly: The Brazilian is a first choice in low, clear water. She fishes really well when the
sun is up and behind the fish. It also does well as a come back fly or a trailer fly.
Mechanism
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, black, sizes 3-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: Black kid goat, short
Underwing: Copper Krystal Flash
Tag: Silver tinsel
Tail: Purple guinea fibers, short
Rid: Extra small silver tinsel
Body: Black Trilobal dubbing
Hackle: Purple guinea
About the fly: I tie the Mechanism short and buggy. I use it as a “follow up” pattern after a
steelhead comes to the searching fly, though doesn’t commit to eating it. I also fish them as
searching patterns under tough conditions such as over pressured fish and higher water
temperatures. Steelhead seem to prefer a smaller buggier fly in these conditions. It also works
as a great trailer fly behind a dry fly or a muddler.
South Junction
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, black, sizes 3-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: Brown bear
Tail: Golden pheasant tippet, short
Rid: Extra small copper tinsel
Body: Orange flex floss
Hackle: Brown Indian hen
About the fly: South Junction was designed to be fished during the October Caddis emergence
from late September through mid-November on the Deschutes and other summer run rivers that
host this huge caddis.
North Junction
Hook: Alec Jackson Spey, black, sizes 3-7
Thread: Black, 8/0
Wing: Brown bear
Tail: Golden pheasant tippet, short
Rid: Extra small copper tinsel
Body: Peacock herl
Hackle: Brown Indian hen
About the fly: North Junction is a great "come back" fly. When a steelie raises to a searching fly,
but won't commit to it. They'll it this one like candy. Also, I often trail it behind a muddler.

Purple Muddler
Hook: Down eye limerick bend 4x, sizes 2-6
Thread: Black, 6/0
Wing: Turkey
Underwing: Purple squirrel tale over
purple crystal flash and purple Mirage flashabou
Tail: purple crystal flash
Body: Purple diamond braid
Collar: Rust Trilobal dubbing
Head: Purple deer hair
About the flies: Muddlers kick ass... I fish them hitched in the film, damp or deep on a sink tip.
One of my best mid-day rigs on the Deschutes is to fish a sink-tip with the Pumpkin Seed as my
main fly on a short dropper and a low water pattern like a Mechanism or Brazilian trailing three
feet behind on point. The lighter color and flash of the muddler allows me to watch my client’s
flies swing even at depth.
