Spey Casting
River Time...
Larimer Outfitters specializes in the use and instruction of spey rods.
We prefer to use two-handers for most guided steelhead trips. If you’re not already
casting a two-handed rod, we would be happy to provide you with one as well as
instruction.  Within twenty minutes or so, most beginners are easily casting well
enough to catch steelhead.  If you’re already a spey rod enthusiast and want to take
it to the next level, Larimer Outfitters can take you there.
There are many advantages to Spey casting.  First, the ability to cast with little to no
back casting room allows us to fish any water steelhead rest in.  Second, these
powerful tools allow us to drive long casts despite wind conditions.  In fact, to an
extent, wind aids in the cast.  Furthermore, spey casting is far less fatiguing than
single hand casting.  This allows us to focus on the fishing rather than a sore
shoulder.  More importantly though, the length of two-handed rods gives us total
control of our fly as it swings.  At the end of the day, controlling the speed of the fly is
what puts steelhead on the beach.  And finally, casting a two-hander is really fun.  In
my book, that’s the point of all of this.
Because Deschutes steelhead come readily to floating line techniques, it’s a
wonderful river to learn spey casting on, or to improve your existing skills.
The Sandy and the Clackamas are primarily winter fisheries requiring the use of
sink-tip lines.  While learning to cast a two-hander with a sink-tip is not as easy as a
floating line, most people get the hang of it quickly.
If you truly want to take your casting ability to a higher level, consider personal
coaching.  Outside of guiding, we offer personalized two-handed casting
instruction.  It 's a lot easier to improve your skills as a caster if you’re not focused
on the fish.  I am schooled in all styles and methods of two-handed casting however
short-belly lines (55ft.belly) and shooting tapers (Scandinavian shooting heads,
Skagit heads, etc.) are the bread and butter of the lines we cast for steelhead.
Burkheimer spey rods equipped with Ross Reels and Airflo Fly Lines will be on
hand for your use.
