Summer & Fall Steelhead
With it's endless fly water, strong runs of fish, and overwhelming beauty, Oregon's
lower Deschutes River may be the greatest summer steelhead fishery on the
planet. This is sage brush steelheading at it's best!
Larimer Outfitters is the only fly fishing guide service offering both day and camp
trips on the lower twenty three miles of the Deschutes. To access this remote
wilderness canyon, we utilize 20' jet boats. The jet boats allow us to fish the best
water at the best times. We're not locked into a certain stretch of the river. If a
section is crowded, or the fish simply aren't there, we can pick up and quickly move
to a more productive area. More importantly, you will fish twice the water you would
on a float trip. In the game of chasing steelhead with a fly, covering the water is
crucial for success.
Our comfortable jet boats can carry up to three anglers. While many jet boat guides
fish up to seven anglers, we strive to create intimate guide trips. This insures your
guide will have ample time to spend with each angler as needed. Our business
has been built on Spey casting and fishing instruction. We work hard to ensure our
anglers are fishing with maximum efficiency. We are not a shuttle service.
Mile after beautiful mile of classic steelhead water exists within this high desert
oasis. Huge pools, enticing riffles, broad tail outs, and intricate pocket water will
challenge your skills an angler. The river screams for two-handed rods and
traditional presentations. It 's a Spey fisherman's dream...

...And then there’s the fish. Most are the beautiful, sleek, one salt summer
steelhead that weigh five to seven pounds. What they lack in size, they make up
for in heart. Their size is by design however. Their slender build allows them to
ascend even the smallest spawning tributaries. The river see’s it’s share of eight
to twelve pound two salt fish as well. More than likely, these bigger fish are main
stem spawners or possibly strays from other Columbia River tributaries. Their
bodies are much broader and deeper than the one salt fish.
As mentioned, the river attracts many strays from other rivers in the Columbia
system. During summer and fall, the main stem of the Columbia can have water
temperatures above 70 degrees. As steelhead travel up the warm Columbia, they
are greeted by the cool, inviting currents of the Deschutes. When this happens,
massive pods of steelhead will pull into the lower 15 miles of the river. We've
had huge days with well over thirty fish coming to the fly in a single day.
Of these stray fish, none are more saute after then the "B Run" fish. More than
likely destined for Idaho’s Clearwater river, these two salt giants are big, powerful
animals that have fueled more than one fish story over the years. They can easily
reach the twenty pound mark and each one will test you. Our biggest steelhead
landed to date measured an incredible 42 1/2 inches!
Larimer Outfitters guide staff specializes in Spey casting for Deschutes
steelhead. If you're new to Spey casting, we have plenty of extra rods for you to
use. While there is a learning curve, most folks get the hang of it within the first
fifteen minutes. Beginners don't fret! Learning to Spey cast is actually much
easier than single-hand casting. If you're already casting a two-hander, you'll go
right into the gravy.
Deschutes steelhead begin to ascend the river in late June/early July. The fish
continue to pour into the mouth of the river well into November. Weather
depending, the river can fish well up until Christmas. Our favorite time to chase
Deschutes steelhead is from the beginning of July through mid November.
