Deschutes River Guided Fly Fishing Trip Itinerary

Your day will originate from Heritage Landing at the mouth of the Deschutes River.
Heritage is located about 35 miles east of Hood River, Oregon, just off Interstate 84.
For day trips, we typically meet at the boat ramp just before dawn. Your guide will
contact you a night or two prior to your trip to set a meeting time.
You'll spend the next eight to ten hours fishing the greatest summer steelhead
fishery in the world. Many folks comment that the jet boat ride is worth the price of
admission alone! We bash through five class III rapids as we ascend through the
breathtaking, high desert canyon. Once we ascend the river, you'll spend the day
swinging your fly through some of the greatest steelhead water you've ever fished.
Famous runs like Wagon Blast, Kloan, Hot Rocks, Bed Springs, and more. On the
lower Deschutes, it's not uncommon to put your fly over thousands of summer
steelhead in one day.
We specialize in Spey casting for Deschutes steelhead. If you're new to Spey
casting, we have plenty of extra rods for you to use. While there is a learning curve,
most folks get the hang of it within the first fifteen minutes. Beginners don't fret!
Learning to Spey cast is actually much easier than single-hand casting. If you're
already casting a two-hander, you'll go right into the gravy.
We start the day fishing floating lines with wet flies or skaters. This is classic
greased line fishing at it's best. As the sun climbs in the sky, we'll switch over to
sink-tips and larger flies. We're proud to say we bucked tradition and figured out how
to consistently land fish in the mid-day on the Deschutes. We were the first ones to
do it and we're still the best at it. While other guides are sleeping under a bug
infested tree in the heat, we're out wading the cool waters of the "D" catching fish.
We hope it stays that way...
You'll find fishing out of a jet boat is without a doubt the way to attack the Deschutes.
It gives us the ability to fish the best water at the best time. We can work around
other anglers to ensure you fish prime water the entire day. Drift boat guides are
often forced to fish sub-par water because of fishing pressure. We know, we used to
guide out of drift boats... It kind of sucked. You'll end up fishing twice as much water
as you would on a float trip. In the game of steelheading, you have to keep your fly in
productive water.
In the mid-day, we'll break for lunch. Your guide will have a big stream-side lunch
which usually consists of deli sandwiches, chips, salad, and cookies. The will also
provide coffee, soft drinks, water and snacks throughout the day. Please let us know
if you have any special dietary needs ahead of time.
After a long day of fishing, we will return you to your vehicle. After spending a day with
one of our experienced guides, we guarantee you will walk away a better angler.
Although we can't control the attitude of the fish, the weather conditions, or the
stream flows, we promise to do the best with the elements we can control. This
includes providing the best gear, the best watercraft, a great lunch, and the highest
level of fishing instruction in the industry. Furthermore, we strive to give you a safe,
relaxing, memorable experience.
